Do most of you guys wait until nearer the race before putting your bets on - Granted better odds are available pre weights but last year bookies like Boylesports were offering 6 places so will you wait for more serious bets until then??

I know Bet 365 are offering 5 places now and have been for some time.

Also in your opinions do you think there are certain horse in the race that may be well in at the weights??

Doubt if the handicapper will be far off the mark unless you know something he doesn't. Having a fiver on something now is about all any sensible person would risk.

If you waited until the day and backed 4 winners in the next 20 years you would be doing well. Trying to find the winner now is like finding a needle in a haystack.

I can guaratee 4 out of the first 9 in the betting won't run and that's just for starters

:D Having a bet in the grand national is always risky, even on the day. That said it is usually the best race to go for ante post. You know you want a stayed who can handle big fields. I usually wait until the weights are announced myself as I don't think anyone but Phil Smith know what the horses really knows what the qualifiers are getting.

I backed Niche Market and Hello Bud in November. Think you can guess what weight will be allocated these days. Of course it's possible to lose your money without getting a run. But the price is often bigger to warrent a bet (33/1 Niche Market). Am thinking about backing Mon Mome now, as can't see him being 25/1 even if he's unplaced on Saturday. Might take 12's Tricky Trickster too. trouble is if you back too many ante-post, if one is a non-runner it takes away a lot of the good price you've got on others.

I find the National a very easy race to make a profit in. Like many on this site, suppose I know more about which horses jump and stay well and likely to improve (than the average punter). You can take what price you like, Evens if you wish; by backing multiple horses. I'll probably have more bets after Cheltenham and on the day.

These days the National is not a lottery.

Of course, when Tricky wins the Gold Cup they won't dare risk him in the National.
