He showed at Old Trafford last week what a class act he still can be. In the short space of time he was on the field he put more quality crosses into the box than any of the other wingers we have are capable of.
With the way Wayne Rooney seems to be getting on the end of everything in the box at the moment, Beckham would have been a great option off the bench to supply that quality.
His experience to the squad could have been key aswell, he'd have been a great player to have around the squad and would have taken the media limelight away from some of the much more important players.
A great loss IMHO.

Such a shame.
Looking at his CV, it's impossible to call him anything but a great player.
6 Premier League titles
2 FA Cups
Champions League winner
La Liga winner
England's most capped outfield player (58 times as captain)
The only Englishman to score at three World Cups
He was never blessed with fantastic natural abiltiy - the attributes that became a potent weapon on the field were all attained by hardwork and discipline.
In an age where pace is of the utmost importance, Beckham became one of the finest at his craft with something that is evidently lacking in this country - technical ability. The one attribute that has, and will continue to prevent us from winning the World Cup.
Looking at all the recent allegations tarnishing the game, David Beckham was a great role model both on and off the field.
I'm sure he will continue to be a fine ambassador for the game and, just as importantly, our country when he finally calls it a day. It wouldn't surprise me if, given his history of overcoming adversity, Beckham returns to competitve football for one last hurrah - he won't allow himself to go out like this.
It amazes me how some can call Paul Gascoigne a 'great player' when he achieved a fraction of Beckham has on the field. Off the field, he wasted his talent amid a sea of alcohol and 'booze buddies'.
I know which one of these I'd rather have in my team.

Himself
Easy to say now that he's out injured.
The cynic in me says that it was odds against Beckham being chosen for the England World Cup squad in any case, and that word would have been relayed to him beforehand of his exclusion, so that a ready made get out clause ( for that, read excuse ) would be contrived by the FA and him, to save embarrassment ( to Beckham ) and the needless hassle and criticism which Cappello would then have to endure.
Can you imagine the furore in the press had Beckham been excluded. The FA, nor Cappello would have wanted that story to hijack the England football team's preparations, would they ?!
Sentiment should play no part. Dare I say, Beckham is past his sell by date anyway.

Absolute tosh to equate trophies and caps to being tagged a great player. It would laughable to compare a deadball merchant to true greats such as Pele, Best, Maradona and many others. Rooney would be head and shoulders above Beckham.

Beckham would of probably slipped on his backside in the final spot kick in the semi v Germany anyway.

There's nothing wrong with the son of Neville Neville!
Semi-Finals? Slightly ambitious, don't you think?
