Classic Winners - Owner's Racing Colours

Hello All , am hoping there are some knowledgeable racing historians out there - failing that , keen racing "anoraks" are just fine by me.

A few months ago I had the daft idea of trying to find the colours carried by all classic winners there have ever been. I imagined that I'd be ok for the past 30/35 years and then be stuck and able to give up. Thank heaven for the internet !! By hook or by crook I know find myself needing only 26 owners colours and am too close to abandon the project but am struggling now.

If anyone knows any of the following I'd be happily surprised and very grateful. Year / Race / Winner / Owner

How the hell did you do that? I spent about an hour looking for the colours of Jean Prat, the 2nd Baron, the 2nd Visount, and the very interesting character Richard Croker.

Any chance that the colours of the 2nd Baron and 2nd Viscount would be the same as the 3rd and 4th ones? (Not that I found those ones either.)

Light, with dark sleeves and cap.

sometimes the obvious is the last thing you try - must have spent weeks going in circles and missing the following :- all I did after your comment that it "should" be easy to find was ------

"googled" - jean prat mirska colours and BINGO !!

bet the others don't appear as easily

The Goulandris colours for the most recent member of the family are emerald green and royal blue halved, blue sleeves, quartered cap.

I don't know if the Goulandris you're looking for is the same family, but it seems highly likely and racing colours are usually passed on from generation to generation.

Those colours have been around for as long as I can remember, carried on home bred horses trained by John Dunlop amongst others.

Well, I've found out that Kirstie Allsopp is a descendant of Lord Hindlip!

Also found out how you got all those Victorian colours: Raciana, by Muir.


Not sure how rich you are: you can buy the 1975 1000 Guineas racecard for £50 or £60.

If you've got the colours of the 1908 1000 Guineas winner Rhodora, that might help you with the 1907 Derby winner Ormy . . .

Godiva won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks?

Would he have been Viscount Rothermere at that time, with his father still alive? In the NY Times it is reported that Harmsworth's Godiva wins the 1000 Gineas.

The first Viscount didn't die until 26 Nov 1940.

Not sure whether you spared giving us duplicates, or whether you've overlooked that Imprudence also won the Oaks [ edit: erm, 1000 Guineas].

In that case, you've already got it.

Otherwise, she also won the Pouliches, but a brief search hasn't yielded anything.


I'm going to get on with finding the Hennessy winner now.

With a bit more effort, should be able to clarify. Owned several top-class horses in Australia in the 80s, and was elected to the Jockey Club in the 90s.
