I don't know anything about French racing but I did see that all 9 runners in the 11.00 race today started with the inital U and all 8 runners in the 11.30 race started with the intial V. Is there any reason for this, please?

Non-thoroughbred racehorses in France have a different letter assigned every year to start their names with, same with their trotters/standardbreds.
