Hammy, he only avoided a custodial sentence for the hit and run incident due to the vagaries of the legal system. I very much doubt that the greater proportion of the population would have escaped with merely a 10 year driving ban had they behaved in a similar manner.
However I do not think a custodial sentence would have served any great purpose or turned Mr Cecil into a recidivist.

I can understand your point of view. There’s not much I can or would say to defend him on that particular issue. As I said perhaps my belief in his ‘greatness’ should be confined to the sporting sense.
