WEATHERWATCH: I did 80 overs of umpiring yesterday ("Nah, leg-side son, wouldn’t have hit another set") in jeans and two t-shirts (one longsleeved). It was full sunshine all day long and it was very pleasant, but I was by no means hot. I have just heard the BBC’s weather bod mention cold sea temperatures too, so I bow to your informed meteorological expertise.
The weather in recent days has actually been delightful, more reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands in June than England: 60-odd F in a cool breeze with strong sun, which for me is the
beau ideal
of summer. I’m sure Neville Cardus would have waxed lyrical about such a day accompanied by willow on leather
Given the late Spring and continued coolness have racing pundits been waxing sagely about horses being late ‘coming in their coats’?
Like ‘honest ears’ I’m not convinced this is of particular importance though the growing and losing of hair is due to hormonal variations so it may affect performance and/or temperament
Over the last 36 hours today’s meeting at Leicester has gone:
– Soft
– Good to Soft
– Good (Good-to-Soft in places)
– Good (Good-to-Firm in places
Firm before 2.00pm anyone?!
Dry for at least another week seems to be the weather boffins’ consensus so the hosepipes will probably be out by Wednesday ![]()
