I was reading the David Pipe stable tour in the Racing post this week and thought that alot of moderate horses were mentioned. Some of the better horses seem to be reaching retirement age. I noticed that none of the Roger Brookhouse horses he did so well with last year were mentioned along with Salut Flo, a very exciting recruit last year.I would be very grateful if anyone can enlighten me with the reasons for this. Can't see him having a great season with this stable of horses.

I have only seen the video RP stable tour and would like to get a hold of the text version of the tour, but am inclined to agree. After a promising start he doesn’t seem to have much firepower.

He is my favourite trainer and would like to see him do really well. In my opinion, he has done well to get some new high-profile owners in but hasn’t been able to sustain them.

First Sean Mulryan sent him a horse Or Noir de Somoza, who finished 4th in a chase at Ascot then returned to a French trainer. A big breakthrough for the yard I thought was when he trained one for JP McManus, but the horse couldn’t even win a seller and was retired, other high profile owners such as Thomas Barr (Osana), Dai Walters, Simon Munir and John Webb have sent horses to Pond House only to have them taken out again. Now it seems Roger Brookhouse….

It seems a loyal band of owners is sustaining the yard, but looks like there are less than 100 horses in training and the remainder of the yard boxes have been leased to another trainer in Neil Mulholland.

Added to this David Johnson’s investment in the yard seems to have all but ceased, there is a reliance on the older horses such as Our Vic, Lough Derg, Madison du Berlais etc.

I think the yard made an error of judgement with the appointment of a stable jockey that I don’t consider is in the top 5 in the country and believe some of the understudies such as Farrelly, Cook and Frost would do a better job.

As I say, I hope I am proved wrong this season and it’s not all doom and gloom, with apparently some horses being sent to the yard by owners such as Sir Robert Ogden, Bill and Angela Tincknall and Alan Peterson (Massini’s Maguire).

Hopefully Great Endeavour can do the business in the Paddy Power in a few weeks time and kick start a good season!

The Pipe yard was overly dependent on owner David Johnson in the past. His financial business was badly hit by the recession and he cut his horse purchasing drastically. He has Chapoturgeon with Nicholls ,one or two with Ferdy Murphy and some Pipe cast offs with Montieth. He shares a couple with the Stewart family that are with Nicholls.

Because there have been no fresh purchases, many of the Johnson horses with Pipe are fully exposed or in the veteran stage e.g. Our Vic, Comply or Die.

Under the circumstances, David Pipe tried to diversify and get new owners. Not easy in a recession but he has had some success.

The Brookhouse horses seem to have been moved to Ian Williams.

Not sure about Ogden. He has stated that he is switching attention to the flat with Hannon and Noseda and has been active at the yearling sales.

re riding arrangements. Timmy Murphy is still retained by Johnson.

re. Scu jnr who seems to ride the rest. He has improved but I wouldn't have him in my top 10.

Agree totally guys in that Scudamore is merely competent , but certainly wouldn't entice me to send a horse there. I could never understand why Timmy Murphy was never given the job as he was already riding many of the yards better inmates through his arrangement with David Johnston.

Style of riding doesn't suit one or both of the Pipes (in his pomp Martin preferred an umcomplicated "point the horse and use superior fitness" approach). Murphy refers to this in his autobiography.

Also all concerned don't seem to communicate well. I remember Pipe jnr being asked on the morning of a big meeting whether Murphy had recovered from injury and would ride that day and he replied something like "don't know, we haven't spoken"

I've never been a fan of Tom Scudamore, just don't think he's good enough. I see in the Daily Mirror today that David Pipe was appealing for new owners. I doubt Martin ever had to do that. What he needs is a high profile winner and he might have had that today if Tom could have got I'msingingtheblues over the last 3 fences at Aintree when seemingly travelling really well.
David Pipe seems pleasant and very media friendly so it seems strange that some owners don't seem to stick around for too long.

I have never known a stable use such a plethora of different jockeys.
It would seem that the glory days may be behind them now and that would be a shame but nothing would surprise me regarding this stable but as someone mentioned with no new horses from David Johnson it seems the quality is disappearing from the yard.
Always felt slightly sorry for Timmy Murphy because he is generally a very sympathetic jockey and this just didn't fit the ethos of the stable. With Pipe senior always hankering for AP (who can blame him) it was only a matter of time before Murphy's tenure would come to an end. Pipe has had a few Johnson runners this season and I don't think Murphy has ridden any of them.

He has been sent a few half decent horses by Middleham Park Racing, perhaps that is the avenue the stable will go down aimed more towards the small time owners and big racing clubs.
